Papua New Guinea is a tropical paradise located in the south western Pacific Ocean. PNG is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with tropical rainforests, inland mountains, winding rivers, swampy lowlands, coral coastlines, and sandy beaches creating an environment that is home to over 800 distinct people groups. All this is contained in an area a little larger than the state of California.
Most Papua New Guineans live in rural villages, adhering to a way of life practiced by uncounted generations before them.
Spiritually, many Papua New Guineans identify themselves as Christians. However, a large number of these mix into their Christian faith many beliefs and practices consistent with traditional animistic worldviews. This mixing impairs spiritual discernment, because the supremacy of God’s Word is diluted and distorted. The purpose of Bible Translation is to present God’s Word in the language that makes sense to the people who are reading it.
