{"id":266,"date":"2010-06-02T16:23:29","date_gmt":"2010-06-02T06:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/messersmith.name\/news\/?p=266"},"modified":"2010-06-02T16:23:29","modified_gmt":"2010-06-02T06:23:29","slug":"two-eunice-messersmiths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messersmith.name\/news\/2010\/06\/two-eunice-messersmiths\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Eunice Messersmiths"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_265\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/messersmith.name\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Two-Eunices1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"size-full wp-image-265\" title=\"Two Eunices\" src=\"https:\/\/messersmith.name\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Two-Eunices1.jpg\" alt=\"Two Eunice Messersmiths\" width=\"226\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eunice, Eunice Messersmith and her mother Maureen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Papua New Guinea it is culturally correct to have a woman help with taking care of your house.\u00a0 I have had the same person since 1984 working for me.\u00a0 Her name is Juli and she has four children.\u00a0 All of her children have grown up in our house.\u00a0 When Juli started working for us, her oldest daughter, Dorothy, was about three years old.<\/p>\n<p>Jan and I have always felt one of the best ways for us to help our PNG friends is to help with school fees.\u00a0 There is no free education in PNG.\u00a0 School fees are the largest expense a family has.<\/p>\n<p>We have paid for all of Juli&#8217;s children to attend school.\u00a0 Maureen attended all the way through grade twelve.\u00a0 This is not the case with most PNG children.\u00a0 Maureen is now married and has a daughter of her own.<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter was born in 2009, while I was in the USA.\u00a0 Jan wrote me an email and said there are now two Eunice Messersmiths living in Madang.\u00a0 Maureen has had a baby girl and her name is Eunice Messersmith.\u00a0 I thought Messersmith was her middle name and so I asked what is her last name and was told that her name was only Eunice Messersmith.<\/p>\n<p>Eunice lives in the village and her father works for a mining company here in Madang.\u00a0 She is very smart for her age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p id=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eunice, Eunice Messersmith and her mother Maureen<\/p>\n<p>In Papua New Guinea it is culturally correct to have a woman help with taking care of your house.
